"Excellent but take care with buying PDAs online" 2008-02-14
By Mum of the animals (UK)
5 stars is for the product only. It was all I ever wanted:

* It was easy to use

* sychonisation with outlook was quick and simple

* a comprehensive user guide that was well-written so I could use all the features

* I could type in realtime and send it straight out in outlook for distribution.

Then it broke. No reason. I took it out my bag and the screen had gone. I had had it all of two weeks. I was devestated.

Suddenly all the failings of buying on-line come to the fore. The supplier pda-mobiles is running the business from cyber-space. No telephone numbner, no address, no response. Replies to email are slow, polite but with nil knowledge of consumer law or Amazon 'guarentee. WTen He claims it is not a manufacturing error but a 'human' error. How would human error stop the machine working? Pressing the wrong buttons too often? And how has he come to this convenient conclusion without seeing the machine? Then you find yourself wondering...well..it DID have a fault. Did the supplier get it from a legitimate source? You just do not know.

And Amazon. Well, bless them! Their procedures are adequate enough for CDs, books and so on - things that are not time sensitive or very expensive. Where it does not matter too much. The average of seven to ten days to investigate however is all too slow for a working tool that is so fab you became reliant on it the moment you unpacked the box. It's too dear to pop out and get a duplicate. Yet you cannot survive without it.

Things do go wrong with equipment. I accept that. If I had bought it from an O2 shop I could have received a replacement within hours of it going wrong with no questions.

So my advice would be:

1. Don't buy very expensive items from a third party on Amazon unless you know the company well

2. If you do, don't buy PDA/computers in particular. They break too often and you need more after sales suppoprt than can be provided

3. And if you choose to ignore my advice, pay by credit card.

 "Uniquely useful device" 2006-09-27
By V. Brean
All things considered I think that this is a very clever and generally well designed box of tricks

I have always used a keyboard clamshell based PDA right back to the introduction of the Psion series 3a, I stuck with Psion untill their demise, and then bought a Hewlett Packard Jornada 720, I have a genuine use for these devices and they are not just a toy. The embedded software on the Jornada was no longer supported and it is very big, so I bought one of these on a contract, and all in all, I am impressed.

As a phone it is a little alkward to use, but my main use of it is for data/e-mail/web, and as a PDA, and as a phone...its ok, but not as convenient as a little pat as you go

I cant agree that it is slow, I think that in the main, web browsing is very impressive, and the E-mail side of it is about as good as you can reasonably expect get given its size, I would give it 5 stars for E-Mail...the keyboard works very very well, and is in many ways a bit better than the larger k/b on the Jornada old 720/680 series, but still not as good as a psion series 5

The rotating screen worries me, as it is vulnerable when not completely rotated...be careful!!, but as a concept it is neat, and the image auto-rotates to fit when you flip it

I use a leather case zip which allows me to use it in situ without removing it...not the slip case supplied, as I would worry about dropping it

The Sim Free price is expensive, and you will cry if you break it, so get some accidental damage cover (houshold insurance ?)...oh and one more thing, as an MP3 player it is very very good because it accepts a standard size headphone jack (3.5mm I think)...not one of those tiny ones like on an XDA11 etc

I dont recommend gizmos for the sake of it, but if you can afford it, it is hard to think of anything else as useful as this, you can use it for Sat Nav as well with a kit...but just buy a Tom-Tom

I recommend this gizmo (almost without reservation)

"Best for those who need a really small office suite" 2006-04-28
By Colin Newell (Midlands, UK)
As a phone it's pretty sucky because it's fairly slow. If you are going to make full use of the integration with your PC and use word, excel and outlook it is very cool. It is neat being able to have your documents and pictures automatically transfered to your machine and for you to be able to edit word and excel documents out away from the computer. The keyboard is pretty good for data entry and you can do handwriting too. Even the limited sketching can be quite cool.

Broadly speaking if you need to be able to enter data quickly and accurately quite often it's a cracker. As a smart phone it's not ideal. I have decided to switch to a smaller form factor when I renew my contract. It's been grand but I have found the cool bits don't outweigh the sucky ones.

Ups

o Can run quite a few applications

o Hot swappable memory card

o Proper headphone socket

o Office integration and syncing with the computer

o Keyboard means you can enter a lot of information quickly and accurately

Downsides

o General lag

o Large and heavy

o Media player user interface makes playing music a pain

o Treating the memory card a second class citizen. Applications like the media player don't look at it for music unless you point it at it.

o Can only use the handsfree with the set of headphones provided or bluetooth because if you plug in ordinary headphones there is no way to get the mic bit.

o Checking to see if you have had any calls is difficult because you have to take it out of the case, open up the screen and then turn it on. You cannot leave it in the case with the screen facing outwards because then it is not locked and cause those awkward trouser calling friends moments you hear about afterwards.

o Can only sync with 2 machines properly (you can transfer files with any number) and you need activesync installed on the machines.

 "Jasjar/XDA" 2006-04-25
By Old Duffer (UK)
Sorry, I can't agree with the others. This is just a waste of time. I had the XDAIIs previously and like this, they spent more time on the bad design and less on perfecting the flaws.

If you use it as a phone and twist the screen to face out, they put the answer/hang up button just where your thumb rests and you either cut off or put on hold the caller.

Performance is slow, compatibility poor. It constantly freezes and has to be reset, OK, it runs on the new Windows platform but it's neither a small computer nor a proper smartphone. It's extremely bulky and uncomfortable to carry in a jacket pocket.

If you want a compact PC/phone, wait for the XDA atom or whatever it's called by other suppliers.

"What I think of this device" 2009-05-22
By R. C. I. Mccluskey (Bedlington, Northumberland)
i-mate Jama 201 Smartphone

I have just purchased this device and I must say that this is a really nice bit of kit. The first thing that I noticed was the exchange of my existing Simcard from Vodaphone network slotted in with no problems and I was up and running with immediate connection (make sure you fit the sim under the tiny silver bar).

The Smartphone has a really nice slim case which feels and looks good... Girls, it's not a man thing either and I expect it could become a phone that suites our ladies, it certainly feels good in your hand and it is not just a man toy either, slime black design. Now where do I start regarding good and bad?

The good side is that setting up email connection, internet access is really easy. I was sending and receiving in a very short period of time. I like the access to the internet and I must admit I thought that I had made a bad choice considering a review that I read relating to this THAT INDICATED Vodaphone network did not support this device... rubbish it does ok. The screen is adequate and very clear. It comes with a host of software to play with and you can also download lots of freebies from the web.

Bad side - It has taken some getting to grips with the keypad. If you have large fingers consider this! Another down side is that I have not yet managed to find an appropriate case so if you know where I can get one let me know.

If you need a Smartphone I would recommend this. No doubt there are other devices out there but I am convinced that I have made a good choice here and I am really pleased with it. Amazon delivered quickly too!

"Just what I always wanted!" 2009-09-01
By Franco-Hispano Irishman (UK)
For me, this machine does it all: not only is it a mobile phone, with a choice of either touch screen or QWERTY keyboard, but it also does many other things. It is an e-book reader with adjustable type face. It's a camera. It has Word, PowerPoint and Excel as well as Outlook, so you can keep your calendar, contacts and such in sync with your desktop PC. As a Christian, I now have eSword and the daily office, which saves me from taking a pile of books everywhere as I also have Mobipocket and thus my own collection of novels and reference material. You can download music also. It comes with a protective carrying pouch that clips on your belt, charger (obviously!) and spare stylus. The stylus slots into the phone itself easily. It has lots of other features. I'm not in any aspect disappointed with my purchase. However, it's no longer called an i-mate K-JAM, but a QTEK 9100.

"An excellent pice of kit packed with very useful goodies, but a few niggles with processor speed & headphones" 2007-06-15
By Silverfrog (Leeds UK)
I have the T-mobile version of this item called MDA Vario but it's exactly the same product.

The main reason why I had bought this nice piece of kit was that i got fed up of carrying around 2 pieces of hardware (i had a IPaq as well as a mobile phone). I must admit I was initially concerned that it would be too large and bulky. But in actual fact, it is only slightly thicker than my PDA.

hidden in a corner is a telescopic sylus which is functional but may be too little for some people. I use my pen with the lid on which just works fine.

Weighing in at 160g it's heavier than most phones but considering how much is packed in this thing it's surprising it's not heavier. The PDA runs at about 200mhz processor speed which is fairly fast for the average user with some added applications. As i've overloaded mine with add ons like windowblinds to make it look better, and additional calenders, it still works fine but a little laggy at times. Other standard software includes a built in calender, tasks, notes and mail which can all sync with your computer. You can even connect your email to retrieve your Google/yahoo/hotmail if you want. It's easy and you can keep up to date with your mail on the move. It also has windows media so you can view videos stored on an SD card of all sorts of music.

Running Windows Mobile 5 it's already got pocket Word and Excel so that you can edit your files on the move. But that's all i'd suggest using it for. Reading small scale files and minor editing otherwise it'll give you a headache since the screen is a bitty (but relatively substantial) 6x4cm screen. The screen is very clear but as with all PDA's i'd suggest getting a screen protector.

The internal memory is pretty small and if you're thinking of adding on software, i'd definitely invest in an additional mini SD card. there you can install and save games on, pictures, emails etc. I've got games like tennis, golf, soccer, crosswords, Arevale (an RPG game) and they all work just fine with no lag and it will keep you busy at would-be boring moments at the bus stop.

Connectivity is excellent with the Vario capable of accessing wifi & bluetooth. It was very easy to connect to the internet using wifi. If you're out and about it can be a little fiddly connecting to public wifi hotspots but nonetheless very useful. Connecting at home should be a doddle if you don't have any security settings (if not why not - you're network isnt secure!). All you need to do is turn wifi on and you're set. the phone will pick up the signal all by itself. Internet explorer is handy to check up or surf the net with on the move but navigating can be a little fiddly. Download speeds aren't too bad considering but remember to just be a little patient - i think with Broadband becoming standard for most of us, waiting for a PDA to load amazon can be comparatively slow.

If you are new to PDA's then you can sync with your outlook email, inbox, calender and tasks as well as notes if you want to by connecting the phone to your computer. You can do this by using the wires supplied or if you've got a laptop with infrared, then you can connect and sync without using wires at all.

The talk time is reported to be 3 hours and standby time is 200 hours, but what does that really mean? In actual fact if you're an average user on the phone and like to surf the net & play games occasionally, then you're basically looking at charging every 2 days on average. I have read in some reviews that the phone signal strength is poor sometimes but i've never had any problems (however i do live near the local city centre). I couldn's say what it's like further out though but even on the move, i've never really had any problems. I was also initially worried about the embarassment of having a brick to my head when answering the phone but it's really not that big as other phones with music players are just as thick. Alternatively most hardcore phone users get a bluetooth headset anyway for answering calls.

The slide out keyboard is very easy to use. when you slide out the keyboard whilst the phone is switched on, then the screen will automatically switch from portrait view to landscape which is very convenient. This makes viewing the internet that little more clearer with the extra width. It also obviously makes texting a breeze and quick too. The keys are well spread out so even those with larger than average hands shoudn't have any problems.

The phone does come with a headphone/microphone set which is useful but basic. it's bright white so not very subtle but it does the job. When you're listening to music and a call comes in, if you select to take the call, the music cuts out which is very handy and the reverse happens when you end the call. The headphones have a volume and answer call button which is good but they're not the best quality. The problem i found is that you can't replace the headphones realistically as the headjack is not standard 3.5mm but 2.5mm- very annoying. However if you're that into music you can get bluetooth headphones now.

The phone comes with a case too but it's a clip on. I got paranoid about this as it's not a cheap piece of hardware so changed case to one that is more secure around the belt but the case supplied does it's job.

conclusion

If you want the usefulness of a pda, access to music, internet and phone all rolled into one and don't mind the slightly extra weight compared to most other phones, then this is for you. It's packed with all sorts of good standard applications for keeping you busy on the move and keeping you up to date. you may find you'll want to add loads of extras to the pda but bear in mind that as it's a hybrid, it has it's limits - one of which is the processor speed. If you want something faster but with the same functionality, look for this phones younger brother. For Tmobile it is the MDA Vario 2 which has a 400mhz processor speed.

 "A true smartie" 2007-04-12
By DangermouseZilla (Doncaster, Yorkshire, UK.)
I have had this phone for over a year - here is my review from day one to now....

*What's in the box?*

MDA Vario Smartphone

Carry Case

Two Stilii (or 2 stylus'!)

USB Cable

Mains Charger

Adhesive Screen Protector.

Stereo Headset (with in-line volume control)

2 CD Roms (Microsoft and T-Mobile software)

Sim Card (of course)

Battery

Huge thick manual

*First Impressions*

Very impressed - to say the least. I charged it up (took about 45 minutes) and then started playing. It doesn't feel too plasticy and light (once the battery is in). The 'dimpled' effect on the back gives it great grip. Obviously it's a bit bigger than your average mobile - but the rounded styling reduces the visual size.

I had a quick play with the stylus - I need to admit here that this was the first time I've ever used a stylus. The MDA Vario comes with two - they are telescopic so if you've only got dinky hands you can shrink it down to size!

After playing with the stylus I had a play with the keyboard.

I was worried that my clumsy fingers would end up hitting several keys at once - but nope, they are well spaced and raised.

The keyboard pulls out easily and the stylus slots into the back of the handset and moulds nicely to fit in with the shape.

The blue-lit keys of the keyboard are reminiscent of my SPV C500, as are the flashing power/Bluetooth lights at the top.

*Ease of Use / Performance:*

If you've had an MS Smartphone before then this phone is dead easy. If not then you might take a little while to get used to the UI, but it doesn't take long.

I've had a blast on Word Mobile and Excel Mobile and they look and feel just like their bigger brother on the PC (obviously with less functionality - fonts for example.) The Camera is as easy as pressing a button, turning the 'flash' on is simply a case of selecting yes for it.

By far the most impressive thing was the WiFi set up. It literally took less than a minute to get on my home network - that's a good 20 minutes quicker than it took with my PC!!!

The screen has a great viewing angle - sunlight doesn't deem it useless as in so many other phones. You can adjust the brightness and I was surprised that it was only on 50% by default as it was so bright.

*In a nutshell - a year on:*

A great smartie that is easier to use than I imagined. It's been a joy to play with and I have spent many an hour looking fpr third party software to install and fiddle with.

If you want a mobile you can use to take notes in meetings AND have fun with - then you can't go far wrong with this. The WiFi is a great novelty for me as I don't have to spend any money of GPRS whilst I'm at home to check my e-mail!

Sometimes it runs slow/crashes - but only if I've left several applications running at the same time.

 "Outstanding " 2007-02-26
By James
I bought this PDA which was recommended by a friend - initially I could not get along with it but now I could not do without it, its great. It is an excellent item to have organising your daily life. Usually people who write relatively negative views are those that have dived into the item without first taking the time to understand the workings and mechanics of it and how it can help you in your daily life. I have had mine about a year now i have never had any problems with it or experienced crashes, freezes etc. I am on the move all the time it stores everything I need and I have added a large memory card to it. I find the contacts section particularly useful for the storage of individual and company information.

It sycs with my latop and the transfer speed is excellent, again I have never experieneced any problems carrying out this operation.

If you dont have one buy one you will love it.

"Top Notch and simple to use" 2006-12-30
By Gill Wilson (Godalming, Surrey United Kingdom)
I bought my K-Jam after upgrading my Palm to an HP iPAQ which I just couldn't get on with. I ditched the iPAQ after a month of annoyance and frustration and the K-Jam has been an absolute godsend. More functionality than a Palm, less unnecessary clicks and menus than the iPAQ. It's proven a top notch user friendly PDA & Phone - with a heap of handy windows mobile, MP3 and camera functionality. Bluetooth handfree pairing was simple and solved the irritating daily problem of having your K-JAM at your ear when you're also trying to look in the diary. On the down side, battery life's not great. Mine's settled down at roughly 3 days between charges, and the stylus holder, annoyingly, no longer retains the mini-stylus although I've solved that by buying a HP stylus/pen combination.
